Tozer Seeds

Winter Squash

Butternut varieties dominate the sales of winter squash and are widely available in retail outlets, Crown Prince and Kabocha varieties are also very popular. The long storage potential of winter squash allows for an extended sales period that can continue from harvest through to spring the following year for some cultivars under the right conditions. Tozer are the only company actively breeding winter squash for UK production.


Sow	May in modules or direct drilled at 27,500 seeds, thin to 10,000 per hectare
Transplant	Approx. 4 weeks from sowing, spacing 1m between plants for most varieties
Suggested Density	10,000 per hectare
Harvest Period	When the foliage has died back and the fruits have cured to a good orange colour. Avoid frost damage and foliar diseases
Store	In a dry, frost free, airy environment. Inspect regularly for storage problems

Buttercup

A traditional variety used by the North American Indians. Cylindrical dark green fruits with grey button. Sweet fibre-less deep orange flesh. Stores well. 1.5-3 kilos.

Butternut Autumn Crown F1

A brand new type of winter squash, Autumn Crown produces an abundance of attractive early maturing butternut-coloured scalloped fruits each weighing around 2 Kg from reduced vines. The long-storing fruits have a unique 'sweet melon aroma' when cut and the flesh is deep orange with a small seed cavity. Average fruit count is around five per plant.
