Sweetcorn

Sweetcorn Treatments & Formats

Tozer Seeds were responsible for the introduction of sweetcorn to the UK market in the early 1940’s, when the company’s first breeder Dr. Dermot Dawson, bred and promoted the first hybrid variety suitable for the UK climate. Today we no longer actively breed sweetcorn but instead conduct extensive trials of the best varieties from the USA. In conjunction with the world’s leading sweetcorn breeder we are currently conducting a major product development programme. This work concentrates on producing better tasting cobs with superior eating quality. These new varieties we have named ‘Extra -Tender’ and are sure to prove popular both eaten raw like an apple as well as cooked.

Formats

Sweetcorn seed is available as either treated or untreated. The seed is generally graded so that the seed from a single batch will be of a relatively similar size and shape. Sweetcorn seed is never pelleted

Treatments

Untreated

All of our sweetcorn varieties are usually available untreated. It should be stressed however that sweetcorn seed is vulnerable to fungal infection, especially during the earlier colder drillings when germination may be slow.

Fungicides

Unless it is untreated all of our sweetcorn seed is treated with a combination of contact and systemic fungicides, Fungicidal seed treatments are used for three reasons: (1) to control soil-borne fungal disease organisms (pathogens) that cause seed rots, damping-off, seedling blights and root rot; (2) to control fungal pathogens that are surface-borne on the seed and (3) to control internally seed-borne fungal pathogens

Pesticides

We are able to supply sweetcorn seed treated with a broad spectrum insecticide which controls early season seedling and soil borne pests. If you are interested in this treatment please contact us directly as the seed will need to be treated before it is imported into the UK.
