Sweetcorn

Sweetcorn

Tozer Seeds were responsible for the introduction of sweetcorn to the UK market in the early 1940’s, when the company’s first breeder Dr. Dermot Dawson, bred and promoted the first hybrid variety suitable for the UK climate. Today we no longer actively breed sweetcorn but instead conduct extensive trials of the best varieties from the USA. In conjunction with the world’s leading sweetcorn breeder we are currently conducting a major product development programme. This work concentrates on producing better tasting cobs with superior eating quality. These new varieties we have named ‘Extra -Tender’ and are sure to prove popular both eaten raw like an apple as well as cooked.

Super Sweet Sweetcorn

Super Sweet Sweetcorn

Supersweet sweetcorn varieties have been bred to keep their sweetness for much longer after harvest than the original types. Our selection of varieties is all USA bred and have been trialed extensively to ensure their suitability to northern European conditions.

Extra Tender Sweetcorn

Extra Tender Sweetcorn

These varieties represent the very latest in sweetcorn breeding. The eating sensation can seduce the mouth with grains having a tender pericarp and a very sweet taste.

Normal Sugary Sweetcorn

Normal Sugary Sweetcorn

Unlike Supersweet and Extra-Tender varieties, the limited amount of sugar in the grains of these cobs begins to turn to starch as soon as the cob is harvested. They are for quick consumption otherwise refrigeration is necessary to slow the reaction.

Ornamental Corn

Ornamental Corn

Ornamental or Indian corn comes in a huge range of sizes and colours, however most require too long a season to be mature in the UK. Fiesta and Strawberry have been selected as two that are relatively fast. Ornamental corns are not sweet, but are edible like maize.
