Seed Production
The seed production department at Tozer is responsible for the production of a very wide variety of crops; we are dependent upon their expertise to produce the high quality seed which we, and our customers rely upon.
Local production
Millwater Nursery, the Tozer seed production facility, is located approximately five miles from our head office, next-door to the RHS garden at Wisley. Here our production team produces small crops of seed for our breeding lines and also small productions of important niche crops. The production at Millwater is under 4 acres of multi span tunnels and an acre of glass which helps prevent any cross pollination.
Field production
We have been growing seed crops on our 85-acre local farm for many decades. Only certain seed crops are able to be grown locally such as parsnip, beet, runner bean and some cauliflowers. The UK climate is generally too wet for seed production so most crops are contract-grown elsewhere in the world. Encouraging biodiversity is also a key aim on our own farms
International production
Most of our seed crops are produced in specialised seed production areas around the world. In Europe most are grown in Italy, France and The Netherlands, other areas include California, and Washington State in the USA, Australia, Chile, and China. Keeping track of these crops and ensuring they are grown to a high standard is a demanding task as we produce in total over 300 different crops outside the UK every year.
